Staying ahead oftrends in an industrythat defines them.
Staying ahead of trends in an industry that defines them.
Trends change faster than you can spell the word “demure,” and a brand’s ability to anticipate cultural shifts is no longer a luxury offering, it’s an absolute essential. From viral social moments to first to market digital innovation, every industry needs to have their finger on the pulse to not just keep up in this ever evolving world, but solidify their relevance to the masses.
Perhaps no other industry understands this better than fashion, a field predicated on an intimate understanding of culture and defining trend trajectory. During our recent collaboration with Law Roach’s School of Style, we took the opportunity to discuss the nature of trend anticipation with COO Chloe Afari. As Chloe explains it, the key to staying ahead isn’t just understanding the what and the when, it’s the why and the how. “It’s important to gain a holistic understanding of trends and why they exist, where they came from, and how they are positioned amongst the broader cultural landscape.”

Unsurprisingly, technology has become a key player in this arena. The rise of social platforms and global connectivity has dramatically pivoted how trends are born and spread; a single influencer, an organic social video, or a designer's statement piece can spark a global phenomenon overnight. School of Style has proudly taken on this tech-forward perspective with their new digital-first fashion education platform. “Taking this platform digital-first has given us the power to reach a massive global audience. That was never the case prior to online learning becoming normalized,” Chloe notes. “With the access that technology and social media now bring, the possibilities feel endless for people looking to make a career in fashion, and there hasn’t yet really been a go-to platform or place for them to go to seek the skills or access needed to get their start.” School of Style aims to be that go-to platform that offers unparalleled professional insights, connection, and mentorship while lowering the barrier to entry to a historically competitive industry, a point that was exceptionally important to celebrity stylist and industry icon Law Roach when he stepped in as CEO. “I’m kind of a street kid from Chicago. I didn’t have a mentor. Through School of Style, I hope people won’t have to figure it out on their own. I want to help people get past those velvet ropes,” Law told Fast Company in October.
Technology provides a powerful toolkit and an unparalleled opportunity for connectivity, but it can’t “replace live, human interaction and the personal anecdotes that transform educational content into compelling storytelling,” says Chloe. Trend anticipation requires a combination of social savvy and personal storytelling. Reflecting on how this balance takes shape at School of Style, Chloe notes, “Law curated this program to incorporate other industry experts from his network, giving students access to the kind of real talk you won’t get in a traditional classroom.” These first hand accounts go further than helping students hone their skills, they lay the groundwork for identifying cultural currents before they’ve reached the masses.
BRANDING
Digital, social, and entertainment industries would be wise to take note of the fashion industry’s power to mold trends and shape culture, rather than being a reflection of it; the internet loves the nostalgia factor, but it will always be drowned out by the turning of cultural tides. Like generational defining style, impactful digital, social, and entertainment moments are found at the intersection of technological innovation and human intuition. “To stay ahead, you have to truly never want to stop learning, always be curious, and read as much about as many things as you possibly can,” advises Chloe. This drive to anticipate and shape trends — guided by a blend of technology, collaboration, and cultural understanding — is what will continue to define fashion’s role as a cultural leader for years to come.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT SCHOOL OF STYLE AND HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED.
School of Style is the go-to online destination for education across the fashion and beauty industries. You can think of us as a training ground for the next wave of fashion stylists, hair stylists, makeup artists, nail artists and more. We provide expert-led, highly produced educational content, taught by experts at the top of their respective fields–the real talk you won’t get in the classroom. Alongside our course content, we offer a place for aspiring fashion and beauty industry professionals to belong, by creating a thriving community for peers to connect while on their journeys. Powered by The Only Agency, we are also opening up our industry rolodex to graduates who come through the program, by exposing them to networking and employment opportunities. I got involved with School of Style after meeting the two founders–celebrity stylist Law Roach and Kent Belden, CEO and founder of The Only Agency. I had actually met them while working in a previous role, while pitching Law to come on to another platform! Shortly thereafter they approached me about this business, and it felt like an incredibly natural fit. Given both Law and Kent’s incredible experience and credibility in the industry, I felt the business had all of the pieces needed to succeed, and couldn’t say no!
HOW HAS FASHION EDUCATION EVOLVED OVER THE LAST DECADE, AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE KEY INSTIGATORS OF THIS CHANGE?
Fashion industry professional education has evolved tremendously over the years. The first thing that I would say is that these types of roles within the fashion industry (fashion stylists, hair stylists, makeup artists, etc.) have really garnered a new level of respect and recognition, especially in the world of celebrity and entertainment. Law for example, has always been a great talent, but at this point in his career has cultivated a personal brand of his own. That said, and especially with social media to thank, the possibilities feel endless for people looking to enter these fields, and there hasn’t yet really been a go-to platform or place for them to go to seek the skills or access needed to get their start. Of course traditional universities over the years have started incorporating courses that cover topics like fashion design, costume design and styling, but there is nothing like learning from true experts who have found success in the field, sharing their stories, their struggles, and their lessons learned.

HOW DOES A COLLABORATION WITH SOMEONE LIKE LAW ROACH CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE OF A PROJECT LIKE SCHOOL OF STYLE?
When Law Roach and Kent Belden, CEO and Founder of The Only Agency decided to take over School of Style, it was a total no-brainer. The platform already had name recognition within the industry and a solid audience base, but with Law's star power and creative perspective alongside Kent's decades of experience with the ins and outs of the industry and access to expert talent the platform really had the chance to skyrocket. For our first Fashion Stylist Certification Course, taught by Law, he brings his decades in the fields and insights he wishes he had when he began his career to all School of Style students, truly giving them unprecedented access. Law also curated this course program to incorporate other industry experts from his network, giving students a 360 view of what the job of a stylist entails.
WHY ARE PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS SO IMPORTANT TO STAYING AHEAD OF TRENDS?
Aside from of course expanding our reach and tapping into a new audience via partnerships and collaborations, it is also a great way to bring a new perspective to the table. When you are working on one specific type of business you can sometimes develop tunnel vision, and getting the chance to partner with an individual or a company who sees things through a different lens can give you a fresh take.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS NEEDS IN THE FASHION EDUCATION INDUSTRY THAT AREN’T BEING MET?
The biggest challenge for people hoping to enter this industry today is access. Access to not only information and the skills required to begin a career, but a clear path to getting a foot in the door. This industry, and the tips and tricks of the trade, have long been gatekept and limited to those in the inner circle, or industry-adjacent–whether socially or geographically.
HOW IS TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMING FASHION EDUCATION, AND WHAT TECHNOLOGIES DO YOU BELIEVE HAVE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT?
Technology has made a huge impact on our business. First and foremost, taking this platform digital-first has given us the power to reach a massive, global audience, that was never the case prior to online learning becoming normalized. Down the line, using technology like AI and other tools we can continue to widen our global reach and create courses that resonate with all.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE FOR FASHION EDUCATION HOLD? WHERE DO YOU FEEL THE INDUSTRY IS TRENDING TOWARDS?
The future of fashion is undoubtedly moving beyond the traditional classroom. With the access that technology and social media now bring, the number of "educators" has multiplied, and the barriers to entry have essentially disappeared. Especially with AI at the forefront of tech, a semester's worth of coursework can be one click away. However, this brings its own set of challenges—a flood of unregulated, unstandardized "educational" content. While I believe strongly in leveraging AI to enhance the learning experience for our users and optimize our business practices internally, I don't believe anything will ever replace live, human interaction and the personal anecdotes that transform the educational content into compelling storytelling at times.
HOW DO YOU STAY AHEAD OF INDUSTRY TRENDS, AND HOW DO YOU TRANSLATE THAT KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTIONABLE STRATEGIES TO REDEFINE SAID TRENDS? WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL SKILLS YOU THINK ANYONE, NOT JUST FASHION EDUCATION STUDENTS, NEED IN ORDER TO ANTICIPATE CULTURAL SHIFTS?
One of the hardest, but most important ways I've tried to stay ahead of industry trends is by maintaining an openness to testing out new technologies and adapting. My initial inclination is to resist changing up systems that work, but I always end up ecstatic when I adopt a new program that makes my day easier. Time is such a commodity these days that anything that can increase efficiency in my day and potentially spare us some resources is worth leaning into. The advice I would give is to truly never want to stop learning, always be curious, and read as much about as many things as you possibly can, to gain a holistic understanding of trends and why they exist, where they came from and how they are positioned amongst the broader cultural landscape.
